A grab is the main way a normal Smiler converts you. Movement will not break it, and reset does not free you.
What still works while grabbed
| Tool | What it does in a grab | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Knife | Breaks a normal Smiler hold. Fails on Giants and on Endangered Smilers. | A later balance note spends 4 durability on a 10-durability knife. Iron Potion spends the rest of the knife instead of releasing you. |
| Handgun | Can be fired while held. Shots do not stun, so aim at the Smiler on you. | Uses ammo. Map copies are described with 25 rounds; a 40 Robux spawn product has been listed with 150. |
| Shotgun | A blast knocks the holder down and releases you. | One shell. You only carry about 3. |
| Hatchet | Breaks normal grabs and Giant grabs. | About half the axe, which is 2 of 4 charges. |
| Teammate hit | Any solid hit on the Smiler can open the hold. | Their weapon durability. |
After a Knife escape, the same balance note gives you +4 walkspeed for 1 second, stuns the Smiler for 0.75 seconds, and puts your weapons on a 2-second cooldown. Older articles described a 3-durability escape and more escapes per knife. If your knife drains differently, the live weapon has moved on.
The Bottle is not an escape tool in your own hands during a grab. It is how a nearby human ragdolls the Smiler. A Katana user who lands hits for more than about a second can also force a drop.
Before the grab happens
- Keep the Bottle's second hit for the moment a Smiler is already in range. The ragdoll is 1.6 seconds with extra knockback.
- The Handgun deals about 10 damage per shot out to 70 studs and has no stun. Ten clean hits down a 100-health Smiler only if they do not regen between shots. Do not fire it as your only defense at melee range.
- The Hatchet throw is 25 to 30 damage, a 0.2-second stun, and a short black screen on a headshot. Missing still spends a charge.
- VIP spawns a Knife on a 15-second cooldown and costs 225 Robux in recent store writeups. An older article listed 300 Robux. Read the purchase button.
Iron and Endangered
If the Smiler drank Iron Potion, Knife and Hatchet escapes are blocked for the potion's duration. Splash Iron is the shorter version, described in a 2026 potion tour as about 2 minutes 30 seconds against 5 minutes for the drink. Endangered Smilers are a separate Knife immunity tied to team size. Against either state, you need a teammate, a Shotgun if it still fires, or orange light you can reach after a different kind of release.
